Il bottega is the Italian for workshop or studio which is the name given to the working system of the Renaissance artists. The essential concept is to have the Master working on his commissions while his apprentices and students work along side him so as to absorb his working practice and in this way, in time, become a Master themselves. This is the best working practice for the formation of artists as proven by history. All we need to do is look at the bottegas of Ghirlandaio from where Michelangelo was formed, that of Perugino from which Raphael was developed and of course the bottega of Verrocchio from which Leonardo sprung.

At the SAS we provide two unique working environments, one for Sculpture and another for Painting. Both Masters, Dony Mac Manus (Sculptor) and William Nathans (Painter) are working on their own commissions and are open to share their experience with their students so that they can develop their own professional approach to their chosen career in the security of a positive learning environment. As Students develop their skills, they may get opportunities to assist in the commissions of the Masters and develop an apprenticeship which will increase their confidence in taking on similar commissions themselves. This is an opportunity that can only be found in the SAS and it is an essential part of our unique approach to what the Holy Father is calling for in a new renaissance in Sacred Art.
